    The life of the Gauls and their customs are a theme sometimes addressed by the painters of History in France in the nineteenth century and mainly in the second half. However, it is not a subject so abundantly exploited. In the case of this work the intimate scene of the arrival of the newborn as well as the homage paid to the Gods and Nature at the foot of the Sacred Oak is an exception to the descriptions of battles.

    It is true that the work is signed Lionel Royer (1852-1926) famous French artist, specialist in history painting. Pupil at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, his masters are Alexandre Cabanel and William Bouguereau. He exhibited at the Salon in 1874 and won the Grand Prix of Rome in 1882. His two emblematic works are "Vercingetorix throws his arms at the feet of Caesar" (museum of Puy-en-Velay) and the decor of the Basilica of Domremy dedicated to Jeanne D'Arc.

    Very good state of origin for this work of Royer, no restoration nor cleaning to be envisaged. Vintage chassis, no lining, traces on the back of two old and minimal restorations (see photos). Varnish in good condition, clean.
    Framing done by a professional. Recent, quality frame in excellent condition.

  • Description de l'œuvre

    La vie des Gaulois et leurs coutumes sont un thème quelquefois abordé par les peintres d'Histoire en France au XIXème siècle et principalement dans sa seconde moitié. Cependant ce n'est pas un sujet si abondamment exploité. Dans le cas de cette oeuvre la scène intimiste de l'arrivée du nouveau-né ainsi que l'hommage rendu aux Dieux et à la Nature au pied du Chêne Sacré est une exception par rapport aux descriptions de batailles.

    Il est vrai que l'oeuvre est signée Lionel Royer (1852-1926) fameux artiste français, spécialiste de la peinture d'Histoire. Elève à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, ses maîtres sont Alexandre Cabanel et William Bouguereau. Il expose au Salon dès 1874 et remporte le grand prix de Rome en 1882. Ses deux oeuvres emblématiques sont "Vercingétorix jette ses armes aux pieds de César" (musée du Puy-en-Velay) et le décor de la basilique de Domrémy dédiée à Jeanne d'Arc.

    Très bel état d'origine pour cette oeuvre de Royer, pas de restauration ni nettoyage à prévoir. Châssis d'époque, pas de rentoilage, traces au dos de deux anciennes et minimes restaurations (voir les photos). Vernis en bon état, propre.
    Encadrement réalisé par un professionnel. Cadre récent, de qualité en excellent état.
