    Sketch, draft in the vein of the historicist works of Bouguereau or Gérôme. Roman antiquity is in vogue in this second part of the 19th century and the decadence of the Roman Empire raises curiosity and interest. This may also be a way for some artists to convey political points of view (mistrust against the Second Empire, compared to the Roman Empire). Here the study shows drunkenness, idleness, nudity, lust, representative characteristics of orgiastic painting.

    Painting in good condition, reinforced canvas with re-tensioned borders on chassis. No leasing. Pictorial surface in good general condition, presence of scattered but not harmful wear. Old varnish. Frame gilded wood and patinated middle twentieth in good used condition and suitable for the subject, some marks of time.

  • Description de l'œuvre

    Esquisse, ébauche dans la veine des oeuvres historicistes de Bouguereau ou Gérôme. L'Antiquité romaine est en vogue en cette deuxième partie du XIXème siècle et la décadence de l'Empire Romain soulève curiosité et intérêt. Cela peut être aussi chez certains artistes une manière de faire passer des points de vue politiques (défiance à l'égard du Second Empire, comparé à l'Empire romain). Ici l'étude montre l'ivresse, l'oisiveté, la nudité, la luxure, caractéristiques représentatives de la peinture orgiaque.
    Ecole française, anonyme (étude préparatoire).

    Tableau en bon état, toile aux bordures renforcées retendue sur châssis. Pas de rentoilage. Surface picturale en bon état général, présence d'usures éparses mais non préjudiciables. Vernis ancien.
    Cadre en bois doré et patiné milieu XXème en bon état d'usage et convenant bien au sujet, quelques marques du temps.
